Sheeaun Academy News & Blog
News, info, and updates about SAID!
Seven years ago this week I officially started the Sheeaun Academy. What?! So hard to believe it’s been that long since I quit my job, moved home with my parents, and began this adventure. I spent the month of August building a (sad looking) do-it-yourself website at their dining room table, looking over the map my Mom had created with possible locations, driving around for hours and hours hanging flyers, and waiting for the e-mails and calls to start rolling in. I waited…and waited…and waited. What I thought would be my first day of class came and went and panic set in…jobless, living with my parents…what had I done?!
I will never forget the hour and a half drive to Stonington to teach my first class. It was an hour long class with two students, Hannah and Lily Careb, and I drove back home on a cloud. As nerve-racking as every step was, to this day it was one of the most exciting times of my life.
This past year was one of the most significant in terms of growth for SAID. Growth comes in many forms, and we were thankful to be reminded that the number of students in our school isn’t nearly as important as the quality of the experience we are having together.
Every August as I prepare for a new year of dance, I am overwhelmed with gratitude thinking back to where I started. To think of all that has happened in the last seven years, all of the people I’ve met, the ways in which Frank, Kathleen, Michelle, and Lisa have made me and SAID the best possible versions of ourselves (that’s a post for another day!), and the love and support I’ve been given along the way. It’s become so much more than I ever imagined. I set out to start a dance school and didn’t realize it would come with a whole new family.
What an incredible journey it’s been…and it keeps getting better! I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us. I am continually grateful for the opportunity to pursue my passion, surrounded by people I love.
Here’s to another year, SAID!
